Damarri Ganyarra-djada (91cm x 61cm) Acrylic paint on Canvas.
This original artwork tells the story of Damarri and the crocodile (Ganyarra). Damarri is one of the important firgures of Djabugay Storywater. He, along with his brother Guyala are believed to have brought many technologies to the Bama (people) and shaped the way of life, the law and the moiety system used by the Djabugay people.
In this particular story Damarri comes across the starving Ganyarra who has no teeth to hunt with. Damarri creates Ganyarra teeth from the mangrove tree and places them in the animal's mouth. Damarri then offers his own leg to feed Ganyarra. From that point on Ganyarra has been able to hunt other animals for food.
To me this not only tells the creation story of Ganyarra but also teaches a lesson of sacrifice and how each creature including humans have an important role in this world.
